Can a Landlord double your rent

I live in apartment complex and my lease is you in September And I need to stay because i take care of a relative who lives next door. I went to the manager she told me she is not renewing my lease and she wants me off the property( because we have a petition to have her removed and she found out about it so its revenge) I told her I was not leaving she said if I stay she will double my rent to 2000 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment. Can she double the rent, also can I be evicted if i only pay the 1000 a month instead of 2000. Shoud I go to court and ask the judge for a hardship for us because i take care of my relative thats blind.

You should consult with a lawyer near you who handles landlord tenant cases.

In New Jersey, the landlord can only ask for reasonable increases in rent at the end of a term. Double is not reasonable unless the landlord can show extraordinary circumstances. It is also a violation of your rights for the landlord to attempt to evict you as a retaliation for anything that you have a legal right to do.
