Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
Landlord problem
I have been renting the same apartment for the past 5 years. It is a building with 4 units. The tenants are responsible for paying the water bill, which my lanlord receives, and it is divided equally into 4.
I recieved notice from my landlord that i have to stop using the outside water spicket for anything other then watering plants or washing cars, the problem is, as a professional carpet cleaner it is necessary to fill my equipment with water, which i use the outdoor spicket for. If i do not, I will be charged extra for my portion of the waterbill. There is no way of telling who in the building uses any certain amount of water, for insance, my neighbor has a washing machine, and i do not. Can he legally charge me more just because i use water needed for my job?

Re: Landlord problem
Of course you can be charged more. Why should your neighbors have to pay for your business expenses. Actually, the landlord can prevent you from using the water for purposes that are not connected with your tenancy. So, find a way to pay your fair share or find another source of water.
