Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
Do leases automatically renew in NJ?
Last year I signed a 1-year lease to rent a room in a house. The terms of the lease ended a couple of months ago but I continued to pay rent. The specific terms of my lease say that at the end of the rental term, the landlord MUST offer me a renewal lease 120 days before the end of the term, and I must notify with acceptance or rejection 90 days before the end of the term, and saying nothing is auto-rejection and means I must move. None of this happened; I just paid rent each month and was not offered a new lease.
My landlord says that the law still says that the lease I had is automatically renewed for another year under the same terms. Is this true or did both of us doing nothing make me month-to-month? Am I liable for the remaining rent on a second year of this `lease'?
