Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

I live in New Jersey and have live in the same apartment for close to 20 years. I have also not signed a new lease in at least five years. My lease ends the last day in November. Every year I receive in the mail a new lease stating what my rent increase will be, and that if I dont sign the new lease, but remain in the apartment and pay the new rent, that will create a new lease. By staying in the apartment and paying the rent increase am I really creating a new lease since neither party signed a new lease? I need to know because I would like to move, but cannot afford to move at least 5 months after November 2011. Am I on a month-to-month or on a year lease?

Any help with this question would be greatly appreciated.
