Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Miah v. Ahmed, 179 N.J. 511 (2004

Under the law for displaced tenant for illegal occupancy, does the law apply to if there was no violation from the town and there was no forced eviction? The tenant was asked to leave for criminal mischief of my property and left on his own now is sueing me for 6 times the rent, I still have not recieved a violation notice for a pre -existing office over a garage that I found out is illegal to rent but ok for the owner to use as office. His lawyer sent a letter to the town for info on the apartment and they said it may be illegal to rent but inspections need to follow before a violation is issued. BTW not that it matters but I am paying taxes on the office space over the garage

What should I do??

Anyone know??

Thank you!

You should hire a lawyer, and get prepared to fight the lawsuit. You have a serious fight on your hands.
