Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Question about my rights.

Hello,

I recenlty found out that my upstairs neighbor has been using my gas the whole year and a half I've lived at my current apartment. When I confronted my landloard about this he admitted to me that he knew that my nieghbor was using my hot water heater for his apartment too( its a gas hot water heater). What are my options here? Should I look into getting a lawyer? Is this a small claims court issue? Should I call the housing authority? What are my rights exactly? Please help, I'm meeting with him tonight to talk about a compenastion package for the gas bills, and I'd like to be fully prepared before I go. Thank you in advance to anyone that responds.

Re: Question about my rights.

It would help a lot to have some idea from you of the following:

are you in public housing? Section 8 assistance or any other program?

how large is the apt bldg you are in

what city do you live in

That list is for starters. There is a fair amount more information that would be important.

No, you should not be paying your neighbor's utilities, and if the landlord knew and let you get stuck, you can sue both of them. Not sure you will win as to both, but you will want to take action.

If you would like me to assist, please call my office. I am in Hackensack. A half hour consultation will be $75.00. You can then decide how you would like to proceed.
