rent lease

my daughter rented an aptartment with someone who is phyiscally abuise and verbally threatens her. The apt. complex says her roomate has to sign a release form to get her off the lease she is responsible for 1/2 rent. Any recourse since she fears for her life?

She can sue her roommate for what he has done to her

and just walk away from the apartment. If he wants the apartment he will have to pay it all himself. If he walks away from the apartment she can then mitigate her damages vis a vis the landlord by placing an ad in the classified ads of the local newpaper listing the apartment for rent. Once a worthy new tenant appears her obligation is terminated.

She can sue in the Special Civil Part of the Superior Court of New Jersey which will cause

a hearing to be half within three months.

I would expect her old boyfriend to find a new roommate to pay the rent.
