Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
rental applications
I'm recently filling out a rental application for an apartment. The app asks for bank account numbers, social security numbers, credit card and loan account numbers. I don't feel comfortable giving this information because it's a small apartment complex and the ''filing'' system is dubious and makes me worried about identity theft. Can they require me to give out my bank information?

ANSWER: They can require you to give that information if you want to rent an apartment from them. You may want to tell them that before you do so you need to verify how and where that information will be stored so that you know that it is under lock and key.
Re: rental applications
I share your concern. There is nothing legitimate that a rental agent can do with your credit card numbers because it would be fraudulent for them to charge your credit card without authorization and the bank won't give them information. The bank account numbers would only be useful after a judgment was obtained. Neither is needed for them to get a credit report on you.
I would ask the management why all that information is needed. If they insist on it, consider looking for an apartment elsewhere.
