Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
Rights without a Rental Agreement to a House
Boyfriend leaves the his house to live with his new girlfriend. I'm left behind to payup debts and maintain the house. He would not provide a written rental agreement or provide an agreement to purchase the house after verbally agreeing to mutually repair house for me to eventually buy at an agreed price. Would not return phone calls at one point to switch bills out of his name to mind. I have made considerable landscaping changes to the property and started to renovate the house and make major repairs -- like a new furnace. He would not pay for nor research with me. I have tried keeping up with the mortgage payments that he insisted that I pay directly. I lost my job then took a low paying job but I'm behind in the mortgage and he is in the state of foreclosure. He wants to evict me and my children based on not paying rent/mortgage while I maintain payments on the house furnance which cost $4,000. I have had tries removed, contactors make repairs to make the place livable, re-done the yard completely. Does have the right to evict me with a contract? Do I have any rights to recover the expenses incurred while living there during the relationship and after the relationship ended? Do I have rights?

Re: Rights without a Rental Agreement to a House
I need more information to be able to answer your question. It is not clear, for example, whether you were or are married to this man. Who owns the title to property? There are many questions which an attorney would have to ask before this situation can be analyzed.
I suggest you call a local attorney. You have a great deal at stake, a great deal of money.
