Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

roomate issue

My roomate refuses/cannot pay their half of the rent. For the second time in a couple of months eviction notices have been served, I have not known about them because although both names are on the lease agreement, only this persons name appears on the summons & complaint. I know that a notice to appear in court was recently served, but I do not know what the court date is. Second I have always paid my share of the rent on time. I also would like to know what is going to happen to me? I am an innocent person & had no idea this person was not paying their bills. & is it right that although both names are on the lease; why is it that the person who is not paying's name on the s & c. How will this affect me? I can afford the rent & bills on my own, I just want this person out & they will not pay & will not leave. It is becoming a very volatile situation. I dont want to be evicted because of someone elses negligience. Please tell me what to do.

Re: roomate issue

You have a serious problem. A lawyer may be able to give some advice, but it is not possible to advise you over this bulletin board.

If you do nothing, you will probably be evicted.

Your zip code shows that you are in Newark. If you would like me to assist, please call my office. I am in Hackensack. A half hour consultation will be $75.00. You can then decide how you would like to proceed.
