Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
Hello. Me and my roommate were renting an illegal basement apartment in Ridgefield Park, NJ from Dec '10 to April '11 paying $795 rent a month and a $795 security deposit. We never signed a lease because the landlord never gave us one. I didn't know the apartment was illegal until I was describing the situation to my family because the landlord told me to "get out immediately" when I told him the rent would be a week late. The housing inspector arrived at the location and i was told to leave by the police officer and housing inspector that came because it was illegal and a fire hazard. The landlord was told by the two gentlemen to pay back the security at that moment, but the landlord did not do so. I was placed in a hotel for only 3 days by the town. What can I do now to get compensation for relocating?
