Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
stop payment
a friend asked me to loan him rent
money. he was supposes to pay me
back first thing the next morning so i
agreed to write his landlord a check
for his rent. the next morning i was
not able to get in touch with my
friend so i put a stop payment on the
check fearing i would not get the
money back. now the landlord is
trying to sue me for his rent money. i
have not been able to get in touch
with my friend since this happened.
does the landlord have a case?

Re: stop payment
I think not. However, you can easily protect yourself against the possibility that the judge won't see things the way I do by filing a third party complaint against your "friend". That way you will all be in court at the same time.
