Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

My sublet room mate was given an eviction notice to leave after multiple encounters with the police about drugs him and his girlfriend used. He asked for a second chance believing he was trying to change. He said he would pay for the upcoming bills and rent but the last day he had before late payment his parents threw him in rehab for the third time. I borrowed Money to pay his rent from a family member and I believe he owes me this money I had to pay. His things were finally moved out by his parents ten days into the month. Legally does he owe me the rent he promised to pay? And if so how do I go about getting it?
