Can I sue a landlord for exposure to natural gas leak while living in an apartment for 7 months?
I want to file a claim against a NJ landlord, but I live in Maryland. Do I need to file in person or can I do it long distance?

Yes you can sue. You can file from out of state. It may be easier for you to have NJ counsel to handle the matter

The first thing that they teach us in law school is that you can sue anyone for anything you want. The question is whether the claim has merit enough to be compensable.
