Tenant Landlord Issues
I rent a home in NJ and my landlord told me yesterday that she and her husband are getting an divorce and she has no choice but to come back to the property I rent. Is this true?

Landlord's divorce does not trump your lease. You can stay until the end of the term. Any renewal rights that you have under the lease are not affected. You may have a statutory right to renew that will be affected by a landlord's decision to take the property off the rental market. That requires a specific written notice by the landlord. If you receive such a notice, you should also satisfy yourself that the property is going to her and not to him. This would be a good time to consult a lawyer.

If you have a lease she must honor it. If you rent month she must give you proper notice and then allow extensions for up to six months if you having difficulty finding a place to live.
