Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
I am a tenant and I recently discovered (through an investigation by the utility company) that I have been paying for the electricity and heating in my landlords' garage for the past 7 months, where it looks like they operate an illegal dog kennel.
Unbeknownst to me, my unit was wired so that I would be billed for the energy usage in the garage, in addition to my own usage. After months of speculation and stress over my unusually high utility bills, I called the utility company for an investigation and they were able to verify the setup.
I have since vacated the apartment and would like to know what my options are at this point, in terms recovering what I�ve overpaid. The utility company says they remain neutral in these types of situations and the landlord has been unresponsive. Also, am I entitled to any other damages since I was very financially distressed throughout that entire period and I doubt I was the first tenant they�ve done this to?

you might, MAYBE be able to get triple your money back plus lawyers fees. Maybe.
