Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Tenant's Rights

To whom it may concern:

I have a friend that lives in Hackensack, NJ, and thete was a fire in his apartment complex (which was electrical, and started in a vacant apartment on the second floor. My friend lived on the third floor above that apartment), and the fire destroyed three apartments, including his. My friend lost just about everything due to the smoke and fire, and didn't have any renter's insurance. He would like to what rights he has a tenant, if any, and if the owners of the building have any responsibilty to the tenants as far as reimbursing him for what he lost, and or what course of legal action he can take, should it come to that matter.

Thank you for your attention.

Re: Tenant's Rights

If he can prove that the landlord's negligence caused the fire, the landlord can be held responsible for his damage. Otherwise insurance would be necessary to cover the costs.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.

Re: Tenant's Rights

Oh, boy. that is horrible. tenants need renter's insurance. ouch.

Well, the best I can suggest now is for your friend to go see an attorney. I am in Hackensack; I will agree to speak to your friend briefly, for free.

If you would like, give me a call; I am in northern New Jersey. I will be happy to discuss this with you; the telephone consultation will be free.

My contact information can be obtained from the links below, just click on the Attorney Profile link. Let my secretary know you found me through LawGuru.
