Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
Tenants rights?
I rent the 1st flr. of a 2 family house, my daughter rented upstairs. They are a young couple who got into trouble financially and didn't pay their rent for several months. They were given 30 days notice to leave and they got out. Unfortunately they don't have any place to go until the end of July or 8/1. Because of my 2 grandchildren (5 yrs and 2-1/2) I asked them to stay with us temporarily. The landlord called today yelling at me that he wants them out today. He said he didn't care that they have 2 kids or if they sleep in their car. Does he have the right to tell me who can stay temporarily or visit me. He was verbally abusive for the 2nd time to me since this mess started. I remained very calm but would like to know my rights. We have lived here for 32 years without any problems.
