Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
Threats of a Lawsuit by Ex-Landlord for Internet Slander
I recently posted (anonamously) my experience as a renter, victimized by theft, on an internet site for apt. complexes. Apparently the Mgmt. of the apt. complex identified me and has threatened, thru a ''response to my post'', that they will pursue legal action. The worse I stated was that the local police thought it was an inside job (maintenance guys). My question is: Do they have just cause or are their threats empty?

A lot would depend on the specifics of the situation and what was said. There are a few things that are certain: (1) Truth is an absolute defense to a defamation suit. No matter what you said, it is not defamatory if it is true. (2) The management cannot have obtained your identity from your ISP without your knowledge.
