Can a landlord legally charge tenants for water in New Jersey?

If your lease includes that tenant is responsible for paying the water, then tenant must pay the water. I know of no law that prohibits the landlord for requiring the tenant to pay the water when it is part of the lease agreement.

Does your lease say that you will pay the water bill (either directly to the water company or to your landlord when he presents you with the bill)? If so, that is permissible. If your lease does not state that you will pay the water bill, then it would not be appropriate for your landlord to be asking you to do so.
