Legal Question in Legal Ethics in New Jersey

If I receive a contract and make modifications to that contract prior to signing it (where my signature is the only signature required on the contract), am I required to notify the other party of the changes made? This is a contract between private individuals

If this contract is about anything that is important, if it involves any amount of money over $1000.00, please, please have a lawyer look at it and talk to you. You want to make sure things go the way they should.
