If you begin to help someone and you are reckless in the way you provide aid, and that recklessness causes harm to that person, yes you may be sued. There is a common law doctrine that says, if you begin to help someone, they rely on your help, but half way through you decide to abandon the person, you may be held liable because you didn't finish the job. A common example is a Doctor helping the victim of an accident at roadside.
