Legal Question in Personal Injury in New Jersey
how to handle a debt
A friend of mine came into my home last month when told not to (there was a vestibule door that should have been her stopping point) and was bitten by one of my dogs. I was not home at the time but I later met her at the hospital and took her home. She had/has untreated diabetes and because of this ended up with a bad infection and needed to go into the hospital and have follow up care. I have no problem paying the bills that directly correlate with the bite. She was doing me a favor and morally, I feel obligated. She submitted two bills to me so far and said that there are more to come. I think it would be wise to wait until all bills are in, review them and then give her one check and a contract stating that with the cashing of said check the debt to her is paid in full. I am not sure what kind of paper work would need to be drawn up for this but it seems like the smart thing to do as she has distanced herself and has begun to submit the bills via the mail and not in person. Her letters are quite formal as well.
Thank you for any advice you might have.

I do not know how to say this nicely. But I will try... Don't be a fool call a lawyer now. You will need a hold harmless agreement and there is a very high liklihood that this person could have problems down the road and sue you. But you seem convinced that you can "do it yourself", judging from your plan of action, I respectfully beg to differ. If you would like to talk to a lawyer about a Hold Harmless agreement call my office.
