Legal Question in Personal Injury in New Jersey

Does New Jersey's entire controversy doctrine require a defendant in a toxic tort action to bring a third-party claim for contribution in the original action, or can the defendant wait and institute a subsequent action against the third-party tortfeasor after a verdict is rendered in the original action?
