Legal Question in Personal Injury in New Jersey

Can medical insurance carrier get their money back from injured party?

While at my daughter's house, I was helping them with repairs. A piece of wood went into my eye while I was breaking it. I had extensive damage and 3 major operations, including a corneal transplant. I am a tractor trailer driver, with a CDL license. I can no longer pursue this career as my vision has not been restored properly. I did not sue my daughter, but did settle for an amount of money from their homeowners insurance policy, 15 months after the initial accident. Now, 17 months later, my health insurance company (which was cancelled 6 months after the injury as I could not go back to my job), has advised me that if I had a settlement from the accident, they would ask for reimbursement of the claim that they have paid for. My question is, after accepting a settlement, can the insurance company request money back from me? Do I have any alternatives? Thank you for your speedy reply.
