personal injury lawsuit against me

i met with an accident 2 yrs ago in a shopping center parking lot when my car hit the shop window. an empoyee has filed a personal injury claim against me. i have insurance coverage of $15000. can the judge grant a higher amount and if i am not able to afford it what will happen? the employee looks perfectly normal but is still claiming life long disability and has filed suit for half million dollars.

They can file for whatever they want but they need to be able to back up those numbers. They could go after your bank account, house, and whatever else you own. As Mr. Levinson said, hopefully your IC will work it out for $15,000.

If this case went to trial it is possible that a judgment could be rendered against you for an amount greater than your $15,000 policy limits, at which point you could be held personally responsible. However, your automobile insurer, who will be providing you with an attorney, should try to resolve the case within those policy limits prior to trial. Depending on the liability situation and the nature of the alleged injuries, you may need to retain your own attorney to represent you interests.
