Legal Question in Personal Injury in New Jersey

yesterday, the 22/4/2011,i stepped on a 3 inch nail on the stairwell in the apartment complex where i stay.the whole nail went right through my foot, piercing my slippers.it was on the tenth floor, the last floor.construction workers are currently renovating the apartment complex, there was no sign saying one should stay clear.my husband was the only witness and he helped me to our apartment on the 4th floor, before we called the ambulance.

today, the management is asking to take pictures of my foot&see a copy of the EMT report.

my question is this?do i have a case?can i file for some compensation?

i feel since i didnt take any pictures and did not stay on the floor where it happened for the ambulance guys to come get me,that will weaken my case and i may be branded a liar.
