If a person has inherited land, and kept land taxes current, but has no deed/title to verify ownership, how can he/she obtain legal documentation of ownership?

Re: Land Claim

You would have to have the executor or administrator of the estate of the person from whom you inherited the land execute a deed to you.

Re: Land Claim

The estate of the deceased has to be administered, including paying all debts, income, inheritance and estate taxes due.

Administration, when there is a will, is started by filing ["probating"] the will with the Surrogate in the County where the deceased resided and then following steps required to give notices to the heirs and/or beneficiaries under the will, etc.

You probably want a lawyer to assist you, especially since you seem to be out of state.

When the estate debts, including all taxes, have been paid, the Executor under the will should deed the property to the person who inherited it.

Re: Land Claim

Has anyone formally let the State know you have an inheritance? I mean, did you or anyone else start an Estate? Was there even a Will?

I practice primarily in Southern New Jersey. What City or County is the land located?

Re: Land Claim

The executor signs a deed which deeds the land to the person who is supposed to inherit the land.
