Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

Lease renewed without signing?

I lived in an apartment for 6 years and always signed and sent back my lease renewal notice on time. This year, I moved out prior to the date my lease expired, but 2 months later I received notice that I am being sued for unpaid rent.

I honestly can't recall if I sent back my lease renewal form notifying them that I was leaving. I just assumed that without a signed lease, I would not be responsible for rent beyond the end of my current lease.

Am I now locked into a lease that I didn't sign? That seems unfair. Can this situation be fixed?

Re: Lease renewed without signing?

If you notified the landlord when you moved before the lease ended, this should have been sufficient to end your lease. If you failed to notify the landlord of the move, this could become a problem. I need more information to assist you.
