Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

Mother-Daughter Eviction

I have a very tough situation and I'm not sure where to turn or what to do.

I was about to purchase my own home and my mother suggested I renovate her basement and build an apartment. It was a challenging project as I am not a construction person and took on the role as GC. I invested approximately $40,000. and maybe even $50,000. into her home for which she paid $160,000. for a year or two prior to the project. The house is now a mother-daughter - I have my own driveway, enterance, laundry room, etc. We never put anything in writing although I requested it after the project began and when she tried to change the deal numerous times during my stay here. The agreement was that I would not pay rent but pay for 1/2 of the utilities and all of the improvements. During the project we set a timeframe of 3-years without paying anything in addition to the utilities. I was led to believe that my mother could use the financial assistance and therefore, even though I made a hefty investment in her house and increased the overall value significantly, I was will to pay a nominal rental fee after the three-years. However, I did pay for 1/2 of the snow plowing, 1/2 of the costs to convert the house from electric to oil, 1/2 of the bill whe

Re: Mother-Daughter Eviction

You have a difficult situation, which will take some legal expertise and some careful negotiation between you and your mother (and whoever else in your family is involved in this).

You have a lot of money at risk. You really need to reach an agreement that you and your mother are comfortable with.
