Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

private property

I have owned my property since 1975 which has a 150ft. frontage.on the evening of Oct.5th I pulled up to my property to retrieve my mail and almost plowed into another mailbox that was not there that morning when I left for work. A home is apparently being built across the road from me. the local post office has been of no help when i inquired about the matter and the new neighbors are not around.My question is that is it proper to plop your mailbox on someone's property a few feet from the land owners mailbox with out contacting them about it? At the very least I think it would have been mannerly to have contacted us about the placing of the mailbox on our property. Who is responsible for the care around the new mailbox? This is a beautifully kept property and I feel very trespassed upon.Thank You for any information and help to my questions.

Re: private property

Very interesting. There are places where the USPS requires mailboxes to be on the same side of the road so that the carrier doesn't have to pass both ways. However, one would think that the local postmaster would know if you were in such an area. The problem is not a common one and I confess that I don't know by what authority the USPS can require a landowner to accomodate a neighbor's mailbox (if it can). There are a few ways to force the issue and find out. Before you spend any money doing that, call the builder and see what they have to say. If you don't get any satisfaction from that, give me a call.
