Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey
I am in the process of renting a NJ shore house for a July and August for a group of mature adults in their 50's. The rental lease agreement is asking for two deposits. The first is designated as the Security deposit which entails and I quote " $1500 dollars payable on posssesion shall be held in escrow by the realty company as security for excessive cleaning and/ or damages." In addition to this deposit the are asking for a second deposit of $700.00 for cleaning as well. My question is can they ask for a second cleaning deposit when the security deposit is designated for that service already?

The designation of the deposit is less important than the amount. The total deposit cannot exceed 1-1/2 times the monthly rent. See also: http://info.corbettlaw.net/lawguru.htm
