Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

I recently purchased a small house and am a single female. All documents pertain-ing to the purchase are in my name alone. My boyfriend will be living with me but I do not anticipate he will be contributing much if at all to the expenses of running a home because he is a student and does not have a full time job. For the sake of argument, if we were to break up after 5 years or more of this arrangement, would he be entitled to any share in this house or of the sale proceeds?

You have some exposure on this, possibly for palimony and for his claim that he is due money back for the money he put into the house. He could also claim to be a tenant (crazy as that sounds) and force you to take him to court to make him leave.

You may want a written agreement, which would be easy enough for me to do.

You are right to be careful. A great deal of your money and effort is going into this house.
