records retention

How long must a lawyer in nj keep records of real estate transactions? I am beibg sued for oil tank damanges and my lawyer does not have the closing documents from 2000.

The Administrative Office of the Courts verbally advises lawyers to retain records for six years. I don't know if there is a written administrative requirement for that but it seems to be common practice.
