Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey
Refusing to sell to certain racial groups
I suspect that I have been the victim of housing discrimation and want to know if I have any legal recourse. I went to see a home w/ my realtor on a Sat. The home was lovely & exactly what I was looking for in terms of size, condition, style, etc. It is also in an exclusive neighborhood in an upsale N.J town where the market is extremely competitive. I wanted to bid on the house that day but was discouraged by my realtor (give it some thought). By Monday AM I was on the phone w/ the realtor & mortgage co by 9AM with a request to put bid with an updated pre-approval letter --which I recieved. A few hrs later, I was told by my realtor that the property was already in attorney review for another buyer. I thought that was unlikely and pushed more info. I was told that someone else had placed a bid over the weekend which the owners had been favorable to--I asked if they recieved list price & was told that it was unlikely. I offered full list price which they agreed to consider. Before end of day I was told that the lower offer had been accepted. Interestly enough I drove by the house today (2 wks later) and the Sale sign is still up. What should I do? I am in the process of trying to confirm whether house is actually still unsold.
