I own a home in New Jersey. I

recently got married, must I put my

spouse's name on the title to the

house?

No you need not place a spouse's name on a premarital real estate property and, as the other attorney stated, there are reasons that you probably will not want to do so--especially if you had to ask. One is that it is transformed to joint marital property subject to rather than exempt from equitable distribution with certain exeptions. No you do not have to do so. There may be other considerations that you are not mentioning.

You are not required to do this. While the marriage has created certain rights in favor of your spouse (since this is the marital residence), in the event of divorce or your death, I concur that there may be reasons not to do this, at least now. The reasons are many, too long to explain here, but I will respond if you contact me directly.
