Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

If a tree that belongs to the township (in NJ), is located between the sidewalk and the street in front of my house and was missing half of it's roots due to the town's contractor removing them happens to fall during a windstorm onto my neighbor's house, who is responsible? Only asking as I am now being sued by my neighbor (their insurance company) who knows that the tree belonged to the town and that the town wouldn't let us touch the tree, and that the town removed the tree roots. Should this go through homeowners or do I need my own attorney?

Thanks!
