Overpayment of SS Benefits

I receive social security for myself and my two sons. They are survivor's benefits (my husband died 3 years ago). I work part time and do not make a lot of money. I rely on the SS benefits to supplement what I make so that I am able to pay my mortgage and other living expenses. Now SS said that I made "over my limit" and have to pay it back. I submitted a letter to them requesting a "waiver" for the overpayment since I do "need" that money. Now they have sent me a 6-8 page booklet to be filled out wanting to know all of my business.....everything. I feel as if this is all going too far. This money is coming out of what my husband worked for and now they are saying that I made too much!! Believe me, I do not make much at all. I pay my own health insurance for myself and my sons plus many other bills. I feel that if senior citizens no longer have to worry about making over their limit, why do I? Is this something that I should have a lawyer for?

You always "need" a lawyer when you go against SS. But you will still have to complete the form. You have alleged that you "need" the money, but you will have to prove your need to SS in this form and before an ALJ if your case gets that far.
