SSI And Debt

If I am getting ssi right now for a

permant heart condition and I have

debt can they (the Goverment) take my

ssi away from me or can they freeze my

account?

Let's make sure we are talking about the right benefit. Many people call all benefits SSI. SSI is a welfare benefit for disabled people who have not worked and paid FICA or Social Security tax. If you have worked and paid FICA, you are probably receiving a disability benefit.

You do not say what kind of debt you have. If it is back taxes or child support, there are provisions to recoup such debt from disability payments but not SSI.

If the debt is owed to any other creditor, that creditor cannot effect what the Social Security Admin pays you but it can sue and try to seize your assets according to you state's law.
