what is the satue of limitations on owed income tax to the state?

Generally, the statute of limitations is 4 years for assessment (audit). Once the tax is assessed, if the NJ DOT files a Certificate of Debt, it is a 20 year judgment. The State now continues to renew the judgments.

If you owe taxes and never filed a return, there is no S/L as no S/L can run if there has never been an initial assessment.
