Legal Question in Tax Law in New Jersey

Power of Attorney Tax Audit

My husband and I recently signed a power of attorney for the IRS to our tax consultant to handle a tax audit matter. I have heard horror stories where people lose their homes from under them etc. Is it safe to assume that this tax consultant can only handle matters with the IRS and the audit? We didn't sign anything else. HELP!

Re: Power of Attorney Tax Audit

Presuming the Power was on the official IRS Form (2848), it should only allow the consultant to represent you and present your position, and try to settle the case for the year(s) involved; nothing more. IRS rarely takes one's home, but you have not presented sufficient information on what is involved (such as amounts they claim you owe, your ability to pay, even if over time, should they be correct, etc.). This is a response to an Internet question and the reply is not indended to be legal advice or to create an attorney-client relationship.
