Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey
Age as Reason to Stop a Car
My 17 year old son was stopped by a local police officer and given a ticket for having 2 or more other teenagers in the car while on a probationary license (the ''normal'' license in NJ for the 1st year of driving).
There was no other traffic violation involved in the stop. The stop appeared to be based strictly on his youthful appearance. Is this a valid basis for a stop?

Re: Age as Reason to Stop a Car
Given the nature of the offense stated in the summons issued, it would appear that the officer's probable cause for stopping the vehicle was that there three very young people in a car driven by one of them and that the driver was so young looking that it seemed likely that he had only recently obtained a drivers license. It seems to be a proper stop. 800 273 7933
