Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

My car got ticketed several times after I reported it stolen!

My car got stolen and I reported it stolen immediately. It was found about 7 weeks later. In that time it was extremely damaged, both interior and exterior by the homeless person living in it. The car is now worthless.

Also during that time, the car was ticketed twice for parking violations. The license plate was still on the car while it ws ticketed. I think that it is insane that the officer did not check if it was stolen while he was ticketing it.

Do I have to pay the parking tickets?

Can I sue the police for damages because a lot of them could have been avoided if they realized it was stolen earlier? please help and I greatly appreciate this site.

Re: My car got ticketed several times after I reported it stolen!

I would expect that upon providing the prosecutor with a copy of the police record of your reporting the vehicle lost BEFORE the tickets were issued the prosecutor would move for dismissal of the summonses issued to you. If your tickets involve only parking violations you can handle the problem yourself by following the foregoing suggestion. If the ticket was issued for abandoning the vehicle you should speak to me about the matter before going to court alone because abandoning a vehicle can result in the loss of driving privileges.
