Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey
court date in nj for a speeding ticket
I have a court date for July 9 for a
speeding ticket 70 in a
50 on us rt 1 in NJ, I believe that
the speed is exaggerated
but I also believe that wont fly in
court, anyway in nj rt 1
is a ''safe corridor'' so my fine is
doubled to $400 and I
have to go to court. I want to plead
guilty but I don't have
the funds to pay the $400 fine right
now, so my question is,
is this a trail or an arraignment?,
should I plead not guilt
and try to work out a plea bargain
at an appointed trail
date ?, or is it possible to make
payment arrangements right
there?, keeping in mind that I won't
be able to really pay
any of it right on the spot, can I be
jailed for not paying
on the spot?, I have every intention
of payin g the whole
thing and only have 2 points off of
my licence for a ticket
that I paid without going to court,
what should I do

Re: court date in nj for a speeding ticket
If you don't intend to plead not guilty, you can go to court on that date and talk to the prosecutor about a plea bargain, and ask for an amendment to unsafe driving, which will be around $450 but carries no points. I am assuming you never had this charge before.
Most courts expect payment in full, except courts in large cities will be more amenable to making payment arrangements.

You can probably make a deal that would help you avoid getting any points. As to the fines, most judges will give you some time. There are a few that will put people in jail if they cannot pay on court night. Debtor's prison is a live and well n NJ. Call me if you would like to discuss it further at 877*688*3879.
