Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

I was driving a car that I was planning on purchasing from a co-worker, while waiting for him to get the pay-off amount for the car. I was in an accident and found that there was no insurance card in the car and that the registration was expired. He since renewed the registration and got me a faxed copy of a temorary insurance card that was dated 2 days before the accident.\n\nIs this enough proof that the car was insured and am I responsible for the car being registered?

I would talk to the prosecutor. The no registration ticket is not that big of a deal. Just bring all of the proof and explain the situation. If you are not happy with the plea deal you are offered, tell him you want to come back and get an attorney.

You are at least responsible for finding out if the car is registered and insured before you drive it. Many prosecutors will have you plead guilty to 39:3-29, failure to possess insurance and registration cards. It's a fine and no points. In any case, take in the documents that you now have and make your best deal.

The insurance card shouli be sufficient proof that the car was insured on the date of accident. Regarding the registration, technically you are responsible for making sure a car is registered before you drive it, but if you explain to the prosecutor that it wasn't your car but you were just taking it for a test drive he may be willing to dismiss this ticket.
