Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey
License plate search
after purchasing a movie ticket a friend and I walked back to my vehicle and sat inside until the movie started (about 20 minutes). The parking lot was half full when I see a police cruiser come and ppull up behind me, sit there for a second and I assume run my plates. The officers came around to both sides of the car and asked for my information. They told me that they had run my tags (WV license plate because i had just graduted college and was back in NJ for about 2 weeks). I did not have the registration card on me as aI left it back in WV when i moved so they ran my vin number and told me the plates dont come back to my vehicle. Weird since my car was registered, insurance card was given etc and car was inspected with sticker. They proceeded to harass me about where i got the tags from. They then ran a check on my license and told me i was susponded in NJ (reason for suspention was becausxe in 2002 the money i paid for bail was never applied to my summons although i have proof that i went to court and told them to apply it).
My question is how could they run a check on the vin and tell me that nothing came up but when i called the dmv in wv they told me everything was fine.

I can not answer your question, except to note that you should document that your registration, etc were in good standing prior to going to court.
As for the suspension of your driving privileges you need an attorney for this charge.
Call me if you like.

I suggest you get a good attorney to work out all of this. It is the attorney's job to investigate the facts and prepare a defense so let them take care of that.

Re: License plate search
Come on, you know we can't tell you how this could happen, but people are not perfect, and computers are only as good as the data put in, and the people using them. Of course, the police are allowed to lie to someone to try to elicit information, so perhaps they just lied to you. The issue is, did you get a summons, and have you taken care of it? If not, you better, and a judge will not care if the police were in error, or if they lied to you, he will only care if your license and registration were in good standing, and if you did not have your registration, they can still give you, or amend your ticket to a citation for failure to present your documents, because you are required to keep them with you and/or your vehicle. Be prepared!
