You may have a problem because a search of the plate will obviously come back to you as the owner. You should have turned the plates in. Do you have any documents to show that you sold the car, bill of sale, any documentation. problem is that the longer the car remains in impound the storage costs will go up and they may eventually look to you for payment, you should try to see if you could get another copy of the title from PA. DMV if possible and ask about transferring title to the towing company so that they can dispose of the car, unless the person that bought it still wants it. You need to contact them and provide evidence of the sale, it will not be easy, Again my comments are only suggestions you need to speak to the company that has the car because they may be able to guide you on how to proceed, but do not ignore the situation, good luck
On the face of it, yes, you are responsible. However, if you can provide some proof to the police that someone else was the actual owner, they may agree to go after that person.
