Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey
do i need to move a snow covered car with in 48 hours in bergen county if not will it be considered abandoned?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Generally, the law in New Jersey with respect to this offense is that you are not permitted to leave your car on any public street for more than 48 hours or you will be potentially ticketed for abandoning your vehicle. So yes the car could be ticketed if it is there for more than 48 hours, but if you were unable to move it and are dealing with extreme circumstances, a Court may consider dismissing the summons. The penalties are potentially severe, a $500.00 fine and potential suspension of your drivers license for (if I recall without looking at the statute) between 2 and 5 years. It is possible to work it out, but having a reasonable excuse for why the car was left there for so long clearly helps, feel free to call with any other questions. (201)-894-9498
