Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey
Got a plea bargain but then screwed up...
Well, here's the story... About 2 months ago I got 2 tickets in Jersey City area of NJ in an incident a) for crossing on red light b) unable to produce insurance card (Even though my car was insured at the time, i did not have the most updated insurance card. I do now).
I went to the court and the prosecutor said that he'd dismiss the insurance proof ticket, and reduce my red light (which is 2 points in NJ) to unsafe driving, 0 points, and a total fine of $389. I have never had any violation in the past, and did not what he was saying, so I said I plead not guilty, not realizing that he was giving me a plea bargain. My next trial court date of Apr 7th.
So, as you can see, I screwed up - i was offered the plea I wanted, but I did not know how to handle myself in that situation, and messed up. Now this case goes to trial. I just want to know if I somehow can still get the plea from prosecutor (he was sort of irritated with me, hope he does not remember that in spite of the notes he took on the back of the ticket? What happens when I go to court on Apr 7th - can I ask them for plea again even if they have already called the cop to testify?

You did a hell of a job without an attorney. There is no way to know what will happen on the 7th until you go there and find out. Based upon your fears, I suggest you get an attorney to help you and try to get the plea and if you can't get it back, be prepared to fight the case at the trial.
