Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey
I have been recently charged with a failure to stop violation in Bayonne, NJ. Unfamiliar with Bayonne, I was relying on a navigator and came to an intersection that had only a single stop sign. The street was four lane wides and while all other streets on Avenue c had stop signs, this particular street had a single stop sign. While I definitely stopped, a car on the corner was blocking my vision, as I inched up, I thought it was safe to go. When I had driven about halfway (two lanes in) I realized a car was coming at me from the 3rd lane. I immediately stopped, but luck would have it that this car was a police car. He signaled for me to go straight, turned on his lights, and handed me a ticket. I plead not guilty even though the prosecutor did not "buy" my story. I'm curious-- what laws in Bayonne allow for a street that is four lanes wide to have nothing but a single stop sign? Is there a way out of this? this is my first ever violation and from what i saw in court, this is about a 450$ fine. What do I do?

You do not have too many options you can either go to trial and tell your story to the Court and he or she (the Judge) will make a decision or your can accept a plea deal which will probably involve unsafe driving to accept a no point downgrade to avoid the two M V points that will be assessed to your driving record if the Court finds you guilty after a trial. An attorney my be able to try and get you a less expensive no point option but again it is not a guarantee that the prosecutor will offer you anything other than unsafe driving (which is the most expensive no point option). I would be happy to speak to you about it further but those are basically your options on what you can do. (201)-342-5030
